De nos jours, artistes et créateurs de toutes orientations, et dans différents champs de production culturelle, ont de plus en plus recours à des procédés impliquant le traitement de matériaux qui sont déjà disponibles dans l'espace culturel : ils créent en recyclant. Grâce aux nouvelles technologies de reproduction des œuvres et de traitement de données, cette modalité de production s'affirme comme une dominante de la culture contemporaine. Comment en rendre compte esthétiquement? Quel est son impact sur notre expérience esthétique? En quoi nous oblige-t-elle à repenser concepts et compréhension dans le domaine de l’esthétique. Dans ce livre, un groupe international de dix-huit chercheurs se penche sur cette interface entre esthétique et recyclage culturel et propose des éléments de réponse à ces questions. Ce livre est issu d’un colloque international qui eut lieu en 2001 à Montréal.

This book investigates the nature of aesthetic experience and aesthetic objects. Written by leading philosophers, psychologists, literary scholars and semioticians, the book addresses two intertwined issues. The first is related to the phenomenology of aesthetic experience: The understanding of how human beings respond to artworks, how we process linguistic or visual information, and what properties in artworks trigger aesthetic experiences. The examination of the properties of aesthetic experience reveals essential aspects of our perceptual, cognitive, and semiotic capacities. The second issue studied in this volume is related to the ontology of the work of art: Written or visual artworks are a specific type of objects, containing particular kinds of representation which elicit a particular kind of experience. The research question explored is: What properties in artful objects trigger this type of experience, and what characterizes representation in written and visual artworks? The volume sets the scene for state-of-the-art inquiries in the intersection between the psychology and ontology of art. The investigations of the relation between the properties of artworks and the characteristics of aesthetic experience increase our insight into what art is. In addition, they shed light on essential properties of human meaning-making in general.

Questions of ethnic and cultural identities are central to the contemporary understanding of the Roman world. The expansion of Rome across Italy, the Mediterranean, and beyond entailed encounters with a wide range of peoples. Many of these had well-established pre-conquest ethnic identities which can be compared with Roman perceptions of them. In other cases, the ethnicity of peoples conquered by Rome has been perceived almost entirely through the lenses of Roman ethnographic writing and administrative structures. The formation of such identities, and the shaping of these identities by Rome, was a vital part of the process of Roman imperialism. Comparisons across the empire reveal some similarities in the processes of identity formation during and after the period of Roman conquest, but they also reveal a considerable degree of diversity and localisation in interactions between Romans and others. This volume explores how these practices of ethnic categorisation formed part of Roman strategies of control, and how people living in particular places internalised them and developed their own senses of belonging to an ethnic community. Ecrites en éloge des professeurs d'éducation physique et des entraîneurs, des guides de haute montagne, des athlètes, danseuses, mimes, clowns, artisans et artistes... ces Variations décrivent les métamorphoses admirables que leur corps peut accomplir. Les animaux manquent d'une telle variété de gestes, postures et mouvements ; souple jusqu'à la fluidité, le corps humain imite à loisir choses et vivants ; de plus, il crée des signes. Déjà là dans ces positions et métamorphoses, l'esprit, alors, naît de ces variations. Le corps se révèle plus difficile à robotiser que l'intelligence, vite artificielle. Les cinq sens ne sont pas la seule source de la connaissance elle émerge, en grande part, des imitations que rend possibles l'extraordinaire plasticité du corps tout entier.
